ST. LEO - The Saint Leo soccer teams are enjoying impressive winning streaks, with the women now at eight and the men at five.
The Lions women (11-2, 4-1 Sunshine State Conference) have outscored their opponents 30-6 since the streak began Sept. 15. Their two most recent wins came at home last week, 2-1 against Flagler and 2-0 against Florida Tech.
Junior MF Bridgett Godwin had a goal in each of last week's matches, while sophomore MF Hannah Beard had three assists (two against Flagler). Beard leads SLU with nine assists overall.
The Lions have had balanced scoring thus far, with Beard, Sara Macko, Chrissy Darwell and Dari Alcantara sitting at five goals, one behind team leader Evelina Viiri.
SLU has pulled even with Florida Southern atop the SSC standings with 12 points (three points per conference win). The Lions play sixth place Lynn (6-6, 1-3) on Saturday at University Field.
MEN'S SOCCER: Coach Joel Harrison picked up his 100th collegiate victory in Saturday's 3-1 SSC win against Florida Tech, thanks in large part to the fourth two-goal game of the year for freshman Jonathan Glenn.
Eusebio Montoya scored the other goal against FIT, which proved to be the game-winner. Glenn and Montoya (10 goals each) are tied for the team lead.
The Lions (7-2-2, 3-1 SSC) are one point behind Nova Southeastern and Rollins for the conference lead, and will travel to Tampa for a key road game tonight against the Spartans. They return home to play Saturday night against Lynn.
VOLLEYBALL: The Lions (17-7, 3-4 SSC) were 2-1 last week, falling to defending national champion Tampa before posting home wins against Lynn and Barry.
Freshman Kaitlin McKenna continued her torrid hitting pace with a .459 combined attack percentage in the three matches. Her best effort of the week was her last: 13 kills against one error Sunday versus Barry. McKenna is hitting .461 on the year.
Against Lynn, SLU had 18 team blocks, and five players posted double-digit kills in the 3-2 win.
The Lions have two games Friday - against Valdosta State at Eckerd College (10 a.m.) and against Nova Southeastern at home (7 p.m.). Saturday they play West Georgia at noon at home.
WOMEN'S GOLF: Finished tied for 15th at the rain-shortened Flagler Fall Slam on Tuesday. Freshman Alexandra King shot SLU's low round (85) to finish tied for 40th.
