Fall Redfish Can Be Found Everywhere

Published: October 11, 2007

GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Bill Miller.

The fall redfish season is in full swing, with good reports coming in from Boca Grande to Homosassa.

Captain Charlie Coleman in Boca Grande reports redfish are biting white baits and small pinfish suspended under corks in the Whidden Creek area and in Bull Bay. Check the west wall of Charlotte Harbor on the incoming tide. Big schools of reds have been seen there.

The 'Hooked on Fishing' film crew, fishing with captain Brady Nelson and captain Josh Ramsey, threw new-penny Berkley Gulp jerk baits along the docks in the Manatee River and scored with numerous redfish and trout. After the tide started moving in, trout, mackerel and bluefish were tearing up the MirrOlure MirrOdine over the deep grass outside Terra Ceia Bay.

Redfish are around the spoil banks and rock islands at Homosassa and Crystal River. Ted and Robin DeLaVergne, fishing with captain William Toney, caught more than 30 reds fishing the morning incoming tide. Live shrimp under a clicking cork was the deadly combo. Trout also were biting in the sloughs and channel edges.
Spanish mackerel are thick along the Gulf beaches and around Tampa Bay. Look for kingfish to show in the next few weeks.

Grouper are on their fall migration inshore. Keeper gags should be on the ledges in 50-60 feet.

Captain Bill Miller hosts 'Hooked on Fishing' on Thursdays and Sundays from 7-8 p.m., and Fridays and Mondays from 11 a.m.-noon on Bright House Networks Catch 47.
