ISLANDERS 2, RANGERS 1: Bryan Berard broke a second-period tie in his return to Long Island, and fellow defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron had a goal and an assist to lift the Islanders.

Berard, signed to a one-year deal Tuesday 10 years after winning top NHL rookie honors with the Islanders, gave them a 2-1 edge with a 5-on-3 power-play goal with 6:04 left in the period. Bergeron, who scored the first goal in the closing seconds of the opening frame, earned the second assist.

This marks the latest in a string of impressive comebacks for Berard, who was limited to 11 games last season with Columbus following back surgery and earned a spot on the club after coming to training camp on a tryout basis.

CANADIENS 3, PENGUINS 2: Carey Price made 26 saves in his NHL debut, and Tomas Plekanec and Andrei Markov each had a goal and an assist to lead Montreal.
Mark Recchi had two assists, and Ryan Whitney and Maxime Talbot scored for Pittsburgh. Montreal has earned at least a point in each of its three games this season.

The 20-year-old Price's debut was highly anticipated across Canada. He led Canada to the World Junior Championship last season, earning MVP honors in the process.

RED WINGS 4, FLAMES 2: Kris Draper's goal late in the second period broke a tie and lifted Detroit to a win.

Henrik Zetterberg, Tomas Holmstrom, and Mikael Samuelsson also scored for Detroit, and Pavel Datsyuk had two assists. Chris Osgood made 19 saves for the Red Wings.

Kristian Huselius scored both of Calgary's goals, and Mike Kiprusoff stopped 24 shots.

BLUE JACKETS 3, COYOTES 0: Jared Boll scored his first NHL goal, and Pascal Leclaire picked up his second shutout in as many games to lead Columbus.

Jason Chimera added a goal and two assists, Manny Malhotra had a goal and an assist, and Jan Hejda had two assists for the Blue Jackets, who are 2-0 at home - both Leclaire shutouts.

All of the Columbus points came from the third and fourth lines, which were notoriously unproductive in the franchise's first six seasons.

SENATORS 3, THRASHERS 1: Antoine Vermette scored the tie-breaking goal early in the third period, and Brian Elliott won his NHL debut in goal as Ottawa remained unbeaten.

The Senators improved to 5-0, one win off the franchise record for consecutive victories at the start of the season. Ottawa won its first six games in 2005-06, and began 2000-01 by going unbeaten in nine.

Then there's Atlanta, which hardly looks like the defending Southeast Division champion. The Thrashers have lost their first three games, managing just four goals.

WILD 2, OILERS 0: Pavol Demitra and Marian Gaborik picked up their play after two sluggish games, and Niklas Backstrom made 21 saves for his second shutout of the season for unbeaten Minnesota.

Demitra had a goal and an assist, and Gaborik - his linemate and fellow Slovak star - was credited with two assists after neither of them had a point in the first two games.

Brent Burns also scored for the Wild, who have won three times at home and start a stretch of four games on the road this weekend.

SHARKS 2 BLACKHAWKS 1: Milan Michalek's second power-play goal of the game, with 3:31 left in the third period, snapped a tie and lifted San Jose to a victory.

From the edge or the crease, Michalek deflected Matt Carle's shot past Nikolai Khabibulin.

Chicago rookie Jonathan Toews scored on his first shot in his first NHL game to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead at 13:43 in the first period.

After Toews was sent off for a hooking penalty in the second period, Michalek scored his first power-play goal, at the 10:28 mark.

STARS 5, KINGS 1: Niklas Hagman matched his career high with two goals, including one short-handed, and Marty Turco stopped 32 shots for Dallas.

The Stars swept eight games from the Kings last season, and Dallas continued that trend with the help of Hagman's fourth career two-goal game.

Antti Miettinen, Mike Ribeiro and Joel Lundqvist added goals for the Stars, who've won both home games by a combined score of 9-2.

Kyle Calder scored on a rebound at 9:03 of the third period for the Kings.

BLUES 4, PREDATORS 1: Paul Kariya helped beat his old team in St. Louis' home opener, assisting on two first-period goals by Brad Boyes.

Ryan Johnson and Lee Stempniak also scored, and Manny Legace had a strong game in goal for the Blues, who were 1-11-4 the last two seasons against the Predators. Kariya, Nashville's leading scorer the last two seasons before signing a three-year, $18 million free-agent deal in St. Louis, has five assists in the first three games.

The Blues, who also reacquired Keith Tkachuk in the offseason, played before only their third sellout crowd in three seasons.

The other two packed houses were for jersey retirement ceremonies honoring Brett Hull and Al MacInnis.
