CRYSTAL SPRINGS - Karen Pate figures science teachers seldom get the recognition they deserve.
On Saturday, the Crystal Springs Preserve, where Pate is director, plans to do something about that.
The preserve, a popular field-trip destination in southeast Pasco County, will honor about 25 science teachers with lunch and an opportunity to explore the preserve and learn more about the latest happenings there.
'These are the movers and shakers, the teachers who go the extra distance to make science an interesting experience,' Pate said.
The teachers also will have the opportunity to win prizes such as microscopes and other science equipment, Pate said.
The 525-acre preserve has been providing educational opportunities to schoolchildren, college students and other groups for several years.
The preserve's features include trails, boardwalks, a butterfly garden and a nature center with computer access, a water lab and classroom.
Jim McClellan, a preserve board member and consultant with Nestle Waters North America, said in addition to honoring the teachers, Saturday's event also is designed to make sure they are aware of the preserve and the resources available. Nestle Waters, parent company of Zephyrhills Spring Water Co., is a sponsor of the preserve. Crystal Springs is a primary source for the company's bottled water.
