GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Billy Nobles (above left, with 'Reel Animals' partner Mike Anderson).
We are catching and seeing huge schools of Bonita inside the Skyway bridge up to 15 pounds. For those who have never caught one, they kind of look like a small Blackfin Tuna but they have stripes on their sides.
These fish will take artificials, jigs, spoons, plugs and live bait. The easiest way to locate these fish is to look for the birds diving and there will either be Bonita, Spanish Mackerel or Bluefish underneath. These fish can be caught casting or trolling.
Grouper also are hitting in the bay and this weekend's cold front should push more of these fish in. They can be caught by trolling or anchoring up and working the individual pieces of structure.
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of redfish in the bay and they should hang out until this next moon phase. Again, live bait or artificials work on these fish.
Lastly, the kingfish are here and with a vengeance. These can be caught trolling hardware such as the Mirro-Lure 25+, Spoons, or slow trolling live bait. If you prefer, anchor up, start a chum slick and put out some flat lines. The cool thing about this technique: You can catch grouper and snapper while waiting.
Catch captains Billy Nobles and Mike Anderson on the 'Reel Animals Fishing Show' on Saturdays from 6:30-7 a.m. on WFLA, Channel 8, and on Sundays from 8-10 a.m. on WHBO, 1470 AM. To book a charter, call 1-866-GAMEFISH or visit reelanimalsfishingshow.com.
