PLANT CITY - The Florida Farm Bureau Federation has named Tampa Tribune reporter Jan Hollingsworth 2007 Newsperson of the Year for outstanding coverage of agricultural issues.
The award was presented Thursday in Daytona Beach at the organization's annual meeting.
Hollingsworth's coverage this year of the state's largest industry delved into immigration, labor, weather, trade and regulatory issues, as well as the changing facets of agribusiness – from the increasing leadership role of women, to the effect of cutbacks in student agriculture programs.
Hollingsworth's agricultural reporting began in 1995, with "Buried Secrets," an award-winning series on the health effects associated with DuPont's Benlate. The world's best-selling fungicide has since been pulled off the market.
She also is known for her comprehensive reporting in 1997 on the aerial spraying of malathion to combat the Mediterranean fruit fly in Hillsborough County and other parts of the state.
