Traveling Exhibit Teaches Kids Safety

VALRICO - A whole new crew of safety rangers is on the prowl - pint-sized patrols who were deputized recently after touring a miniature makeshift home where dangers lurked around every corner.

Children at Lithia Springs Elementary School were among hundreds across the Tampa Bay area who have been visiting the Great Safety Adventure, a traveling educational program offered by the Home Safety Council, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing injuries in the home.

The traveling exhibit has two more stops in Hillsborough County: from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Lowe's store at 12901 N. Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa, and the same hours Oct. 20 at the Lowe's at 6201 Commerce Palms Drive in New Tampa.
Children and parents who tour the home become 'safety rangers' as they join tour guides and Rover, the program's 'home safety hound,' finding common safety hazards that could cause falls, poisonings, fires and burns, choking, suffocation and drowning.

Ashley Russo, 7, said the exhibit taught her how to stop and drop if there is a fire or smoke.

'I learned how to go out a window or a door,' she said.

The initiative is sponsored by Lowe's Home Improvement stores and has been educating children in elementary schools and home improvement stores across the country about home safety for the past nine years.
