ZEPHYRHILLS - Mitchell's Megan Van Etten had the best score Thursday, but a pair of Wesley Chapel girls had some interesting stories.
Van Etten fired an 1-over-par 62 to lead her golf team to the Sunshine Athletic Conference medalist and team titles Thursday at Hidden Creek Golf Club.
Van Etten topped Wesley Chapel's T.J. Adipietro, who carded a 65. Sam Friese, also of Wesley Chapel, was third with a 70. Gulf's Bailey Logan was fourth with a 72.
Mitchell won the team title with a 298 total. Wesley Chapel was second with 314. Zephyrhills finished third with 344.
Adipietro, a senior, had a seven on the second hole and was never able to recover.
'I triple bogeyed the second hole, so that wasn't very good,' Adipietro said. 'I just couldn't birdie enough.
'It's a pretty easy course but I couldn't make any putts. Megan played amazing. She had a very good short game.'
Friese, the second-best finisher for Wesley Chapel, surprised herself.
'I hit 17 greens in regulation and bogeyed half of them,' Friese said, with a smile. 'I got nine bogeys and nine pars. It was strange. I couldn't putt. I three-putted almost half of the holes. Megan had a great round. I'm not going to lie.
'If you don't hit it in the right spot, it can be hard. It's a fun little course. I like it.'
'It was great,' Zephyrhills coach Rick Green said. 'The course was in real good condition. We started at 8:30 a.m. and were done at quarter 'til 2 p.m.. That's one of the fastest times we have finished it. There were no complaints from anyone. I know a lot of kids shot their very best rounds. I know some of my players shot the very best they have ever had.'
