HUDSON - As River Ridge celebrated an early touchdown that appeared to threaten all the festivities on homecoming night at Hudson, the Cobras appeared to be showing the effects of playing their second game in five days.
But the final three quarters proved that the Cobras still had plenty of points to score in their whirlwind week.
Hudson (4-2) amassed eight unanswered touchdowns, blowing out River Ridge 63-14 for its third consecutive win. It gave the Cobras 129 points this week, following up a 66-point effort on Monday against Wiregrass Ranch.
'I never even thought about that,' Hudson coach Mark Nash said. 'We were really trying not to have that many points.'
There may be different priorities for next week's critical Class 3A-District 8 game against archrival Gulf. The Cobras are clearly playing their best offense of the year, wearing down the Royal Knights (1-5) defense for 563 total yards.
'We've got so many weapons on offense. We're not one-dimensional, and they kind of balance each other out,' said fullback Sean Scott, who had 127 yards rushing, 84 receiving, three touchdowns and a 2-point conversion run. 'Just lightin' it up.'
But after a fumble by quarterback Zack Wynn on Hudson's opening drive, recovered by Knights lineman Craig Midkiff, the Cobras fell behind 7-0 on Blake Spinks' 19-yard touchdown pass to Markel Bell. Spinks threw for 89 yards in the first quarter and 200 yards and two touchdowns overall.
Wynn, however, emphatically atoned for his mistake the rest of the game. He completed his first 11 passes, and finished 14 of 16 for 246 yards passing, and had four TDs (two rushing, two passing). He also was good on 7-for-8 extra points.
Wynn found Scott for a 62-yard screen pass to set up Hudson's first touchdown (a Wynn run), and from there Nash had no trouble spreading the touchdown wealth. Receivers Patrick Solis and Dylan Jordan, along with tailback JoJo Cimino and backup quarterback Dylan Luke, all found the end zone. Tony Germano (six catches, 104 yards) was Hudson's top receiver.
The Cobras were playing without star linebacker Paul James, suspended for an on-campus incident Thursday. Nonetheless, they proceeded to shut down River Ridge's offense after the early score.
Knights senior tailback Shawn Ford ran for 66 yards, and 6-foot-5 receiver Lance Babcock had five catches for 73 yards, but was kept out of the end zone. Spinks did find Mario Stewart for a breakaway 76-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
'Every time Hudson touched the ball they scored, and it put pressure on us offensively to try to keep up, and we're just not good enough,' River Ridge coach Tim Stevens said. 'We've got to get a lot better.'
