ST. PETERSBURG - Northeast entered Friday night's home game against East Lake undefeated. But East Lake rolled off two quick first-quarter touchdowns to put Northeast and Jeff Brinson in a corner that he could not run them out of. The Vikings went on to lose their first game of the season, as East Lake won, 17-7, in a non-district matchup.
Blake Robles went 6-for-7 for 93 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles. His 30-yard pass to Jacob Rachel opened up scoring for the Eagles in a 50-yard, two-minute scoring drive. On East Lake's next possession, Micah Powell broke for a 29-yard run on first down to put the Eagles in Viking territory. Five plays later, Robles hooked up with Richie Bailey for a 20-yard touchdown reception.
Brinson managed to rack up 148 rushing yards and one touchdown, a second-half score to cut the margin to seven points. The Vikings' defense limited the Eagles to six first downs, but a fumble of Drew Petzoldt's punt in the third quarter was a back-breaking play. It kept the Eagles alive and in Viking territory, and Petzoldt was able to nail a 32-yard field goal to extend the lead to 10.
'It was a heck of a team we beat,' East Lake coach Bob Hudson said. 'I'm so proud of my guys. Hopefully we gained some momentum. I don't want to peak until Week 10, but hopefully we are still climbing that mountain.'
