WHO'S HOT
Chamberlain - Billy Turner's squad is rolling. Friday night's come-from-behind victory against Jefferson was the Chiefs' fourth straight. While the defense's shutout streak came to an end at 13 quarters when the Dragons scored 14 in the second quarter, the unit pitched a shutout in the second half to aid the comeback.
Tampa Catholic - Friday's road win against Jacksonville Trinity Christian was the fourth straight for the Crusaders after suffering that heartbreaking loss to CCC in Week 2. While the latest win was a big one, the true test for Bob Henriquez's squad comes in the three-week stretch of district games that starts next week at Mulberry.
Thunder and Lightning - Brandon running backs Marquel Gilmore and Samir Baker, respectively, aptly known by their new monikers. Each eclipsed the 100-yard plateau for the third consecutive game in Friday's win against Blake. Gilmore rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns, while Baker totaled 144 rushing yards and three scores.
Plant WR Cornelius Gallon - The senior was overshadowed much of last season by the performance of counterpart Derek Winter, but Gallon has been the one living in the spotlight recently. He scored two touchdowns and collected two interceptions Friday in the Panthers' win against Hillsborough, his fifth multi-touchdown performance this season.
WHO'S NOT
Berkeley Prep - Remember that hot 3-0 start for the Bucs and new Coach Dominick Ciao? It's over. Friday night's loss to Winter Park Trinity Prep was the team's third straight. The Bucs had better get things together quick. Already sitting at 0-1 in Class 2B-District 6 play, their season hangs in the balance with next week's game against Sarasota Cardinal Mooney.
Newsome - The Wolves were riding high a few weeks ago, but the bottom seems to have fallen out. Friday's loss at Riverview was the team's third in their past four games. The past two losses have been extremely tough, as they've been outscored 76-10. That included a shutout loss at Brandon on Oct. 5, the first time the Wolves had been shut out in more than two years.
BY THE NUMBERS
129 - Combined points scored by Hudson this week in victories against Wiregrass Ranch (66) on Monday and River Ridge (63) on Friday.
100 - Career victories for Wesley Chapel coach John Castelamare after Friday's win against Sunlake.
14 - Victories for Bloomingdale's Corey Brinson after Friday's win against Leto, leaving him one shy of tying Terry Long (1992-1996) for most coaching wins in program history.
5 - Victories for Sickles this season after Friday's win against Spoto, and also the number of victories for the Gryphons combined in the three previous years under Coach Pat O'Brien.
4 - 100-yard receiving games this season for Lennard junior wideout Blake Kennedy. Kennedy had six catches for 115 yards and a touchdown in Friday's loss to Tampa Bay Tech.
2 - Touchdowns scored by Freedom's offense in Friday's loss to Durant, doubling the number the Patriots had through their first five games.
SLOPPY DISPLAY
Within the first two minutes of the Newsome-Riverview game Friday, both teams fumbled on their first two drives ... and it didn't get any better. The teams had a combined 12 fumbles during the game, six of which were lost.
'There was some good hitting going on,' Riverview coach Dan O'Regan said.
Newsome lost four while Riverview lost two, both in the first half. The Wolves suffered back-to-back fumbles in the fourth quarter, both within their own 30, which helped set up two of Riverview's five second-half touchdowns.
The game also was plagued with penalties. Newsome had eight penalties for 72 yards, the bulk for pass interference; Riverview had nine for 85 yards, the most crucial a holding penalty on a 78-yard punt return.
