Published: October 13, 2007

BALTIMORE - Leo Mazzone was fired as pitching coach of the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, less than two weeks after completing his second season with a struggling staff.

Mazzone worked wonders with the Atlanta Braves from June 1990 through the end of the 2005 season but could not duplicate that success with the Orioles.

'I spoke with Leo on Friday and told him I appreciated his efforts here,' Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. 'Moving forward, I felt that we would be better served with someone else working with our young staff and that it was in his best interests and our best interests to give him an opportunity to look elsewhere now.'

Mazzone, who turns 59 on Tuesday, had one year left on the three-year contract he signed before the 2006 season.

BREWERS: Left-hander Chris Capuano had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

GIANTS: Promoted former major-leaguer Fred Stanley to replace Jack Hiatt as the team's director of player development.

PADRES: Closer Trevor Hoffman had arthroscopic surgery to remove a few small bone chips from his right elbow. He's expected to be ready by spring training.

REDS: Dusty Baker has interviewed with Cincinnati for its vacant managing job, according to a person within the organization familiar with the search.

YANKEES: Have decided to begin spring training with Joba Chamberlain in the starting rotation, along with Phil Hughes and Chien-Ming Wang.

Speaking with a reporter from The Associated Press, owner George Steinbrenner's son, Hank, confirmed the news on Chamberlain - who allowed just one earned run during 24 innings in the regular season as a setup man for Mariano Rivera.

LOW RATINGS: The NLCS opener between Colorado and Arizona was easily the least-watched LCS prime-time game ever. Colorado's 5-1 victory against Arizona on Thursday night received a 3.6 national rating.

The previous low for a prime-time LCS game was 4.9, set by Game 4 of the AL Championship Series between the Chicago White Sox and the Angels on Fox in 2005 and matched by Game 3 of the NLCS between St. Louis and the Mets on Fox last year.
