Regarding 'Spending The Future' (front page, Oct. 12):
Surprisingly, current and past county commission members have nearly spent all the projected tax revenue. These commissioners, like homeowners who irresponsibly borrowed (I mean gambled) on future home values, have put Hillsborough County taxpayers in jeopardy.
What happens if the local economy falters or tourism slows down and sales taxes dry up? Another tax will be proposed, called a 'continued community investment' or 'infrastructure enhancement.'
Commissioners, past and present, promised to be fiscal guardians of our money. They haven't, but at least one commissioner gets it: 'If you keep tapping it faster than it's growing, you're going to get in trouble down the road.' Just goes to show that if you give a politician access to money which isn't theirs, they spend it. Hopefully, voters will remember this and other recent monkey business in 2008; I know I will.
