TAMPA - With the busy fall season here, America's Second Harvest food bank needs more volunteers and donations to get through the holidays and into the new year.
"The need goes up incrementally every year," said Mark Southerland, resource development director of the food bank that distributes about 11 million pounds of food each year.
Hundreds of nonprofit agencies come to the warehouse off Adamo Drive to shop for food they then dole out to the needy. Getting the food ready for the volunteers also takes volunteers, Southerland said.
Groups and individuals, including teens who need community service hours, come to the warehouse and help sort surplus food items brought in by the truckloads from businesses including Publix and Albertson's.
The agency also is looking for donated frozen turkeys that can be handed out for Thanksgiving.
To find out more, call volunteer coordinator WiIlene Hayward at (813) 254-1190, Ext. 112.
America's Second Harvest serves nonprofit groups in Hillsborough, Pasco, Polk and Manatee counties.
