TAMPA - Cambridge (4-3, 2-2 Class 1B-District 6) calmed the Hurricanes in an offensive windstorm Saturday at Jefferson, blanking Bishop McLaughlin 47-0.
Running back Taylor Cabral ran 11 times for 139 yards and accounted for five of seven TDs. In addition, the 185-pound senior's foot was unexpectedly called into action and due to injuries, served as the team's third-string place-kicker, making three of six extra points.
The Lancers opening the scoring with 7:40 left in the first quarter after quarterback Michael Miller hit Josh Lockwood on a roll-out from 32 yards out.
After a missed Cabral extra point, it was all Cabral on the field, as he accounted for the next five Cambridge touchdowns, including a 55-yard sprint with 10 minutes left in the third quarter.
He has 13 touchdowns and 980 yards rushing for the season.
The Lancer defense helped keep Cabral on the field, intercepting the Hurricanes (1-5, 0-3) three times for 21 yards, recording two sacks for 13 yards and limiting them to no completions on 10 attempts.
Cambridge played two quarterbacks, with senior Michael Miller completing two of two passes for 35 yards.
Cambridge coach Rick Shears even gave the ball to eighth-grade quarterback Hayden Kelley, who connected on one of three passes for 7 yards.
'We knew they were a strong team, so we knew we had to jump on them early,' Shears said. 'And I think we did that.'
