TAMPA - The Bucs continued to tweak their roster and their corps of running backs Saturday when they promoted fullback Lionel Gates from the practice squad and released halfback Kenneth Darby.
Gates spent time with the Bucs last season and during training camp this year and was signed to the practice squad last week after Michael Pittman went down with an ankle injury.
Darby was a seventh-round draft pick of the Bucs this past April. He was let go in the final roster cut, but was re-signed to the practice squad and later was added to the 53-man roster.
Darby was expected to serve as Earnest Graham's backup at tailback today against Tennessee. His absence may mean that B.J. Askew will handle those duties with Gates and newcomer Zack Crockett serving as fullbacks.
