Published: October 15, 2007

NEW PORT RICHEY - In observance of National Book Month, McDonald's sponsored a program Thursday at Longleaf Elementary School. Restaurant officials are visiting schools across the Tampa Bay area to let children know how important reading is, and where it can lead them.
Ronald McDonald visited the school with the goal of educating while entertaining - and showing the children that books are magical, the restaurant said in a statement.

The iconic clown visited kindergarten classes at Longleaf.

'Ronald McDonald helps children understand how to be safe, how to be a good sport, how to be a friend - and how to achieve a balanced, active lifestyle,' the statement said.

'McDonald's restaurants of Tampa Bay are working to build a rich heritage of caring for the well-being of children and supporting schools and local communities by providing education programs rewarding good grades and school attendance in local restaurants, or education assistance, including reimbursement for school tuition and other education expenses and local scholarships.'
