It won't be a matchup of unbeaten football teams, as some had projected, but it will be a battle nonetheless when the Hillsborough Terriers (6-1) march into Lyle Flagg Field to take on the Armwood Hawks (7-0) in a Class 4A-District 11 showdown.
Hillsborough is coming off its first loss, a 35-16 setback to Plant; Armwood survived a scare from Plant City, 14-10.
That said, look for both teams to be on top of their games, with the winner taking command in 4A-11. The Terriers will enter with a 2-0 district mark; Armwood is 1-0.
The game will showcase some of the area's most highly touted players in Armwood lineman Matt Patchan and running back Eric Smith, and Hillsborough lineman Moses McCray and linebacker Marc Thomas. It also will feature two of the most-successful and longest-tenured coaches in Hillsborough County: Armwood's Sean Callahan and Hillsborough's Earl Garcia.
Armwood has won three of the past four meetings in the rivalry, including two victories last season (19-9 in the regular-season opener, 32-7 in a Class 4A region quarterfinal).
The last time Hillsborough came out on top, a 21-20 victory in the 2005 regular-season opener, it snapped the Hawks' 29-game on-field winning streak, which was formed by Armwood's consecutive state championship seasons in 2003-04.
