CLEARWATER BEACH – A grenade discovered this morning on the sidewalk at Mandalay Avenue and Royal Way was a dud, authorities said.
Members of the Tampa Bay Regional Bomb Task Force removed the grenade, which wasn't a danger because it was only a shell. The inside mechanisms had been removed.
The police officer who spotted it during routine patrol couldn't tell by appearance because the pin was attached, according to a Clearwater police news release.
Traffic and activities on Clearwater Beach are back to normal.
But it was a different beach scene shortly before 11 a.m. today. Police shut down a one-block area at Mandalay Avenue and Royal Way. Traffic was diverted to the north and south. However, no buildings or people were evacuated.
The device was found near an empty lot in a residential and commercial area at the north end of the beach, the release states. Police do not think criminal activity was involved.
