ST. LEO - The Lions women's soccer team will take a nine-match winning streak into a critical Sunshine State Conference game Wednesday against No. 4 Tampa.
No. 20 Saint Leo (12-2, 5-1 SSC) won its lone match last week, rallying from an early deficit to beat Lynn 3-1 on Saturday. The Lions moved into sole possession of first in the SSC standings with the victory, ahead of second-place UT (12-1-1, 4-0). Teams get three points for a win and one for a tie.
Junior GK Lauren Hudson was named the SSC defensive player of the week for her six-save performance against Lynn. Hudson and the Lions have held their last seven opponents to one or fewer goals.
MF Bridgett Godwin had a goal and an assist against the Knights, while freshmen Stacey Rodwell and Dari Alcantara scored the other goals.
Saint Leo lost twice to Tampa last season, both in overtime. The Spartans are 4-0 this year against nationally ranked teams.
MEN'S SOCCER: The Lions lost two SSC matches last week, 4-2 to Tampa and 5-1 to Lynn, and fell to 7-4-2 overall and 3-3 in the SSC.
After allowing three goals or less in all of their games last season, the Lions have allowed four or more goals three times this year.
Saint Leo's leading scorers - Jonathan Glenn and Eusebio Montoya - each had a goal during the week, raising their total to 11 goals apiece this season, tied for third-best in the conference.
The Lions will play Florida Southern on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Flagler on Saturday at 1. Both matches are at University Field.
VOLLEYBALL: Setter Michelle Nogueras was named the SSC offensive player of the week following the Lions' 3-0 record in matches against Valdosta State, Nova Southeastern and West Georgia.
The sophomore hit .400, averaged 11.6 assists per game, and notched triple-doubles against NSU and West Georgia. The perfect week improved the Lions' record to 20-7, 4-4 in the SSC. They are the first team to reach 20 wins in the conference, but are fifth in the standings.
The Lions have another busy week ahead, with four matches including a road meeting with Florida Southern. They'll return home Saturday to host Henderson State and Northwood in the Saint Leo Tournament.
MEN'S GOLF: Finished ninth at Tuesday's Spartan Invitational at Rogers Park Golf Course in Tampa. Junior Matt Cornuet was third individually at 4 over par (72-71-74).
