Published: October 16, 2007

ODESSA - Berkeley Prep freshman Blake Morris proved Monday to be king of the Bucs' home course, The Eagles. Jesuit's boys golf team, however, proved it was still king of the district.

On a windy day on the Lakes course, Morris fired an even-par 72 to take individual medalist honors, but the Tigers got rounds in the 70s from Dylan Malafronte (76) and Trent Silver (77) to repeat as Class 1A-District 14 champs, narrowly edging Berkeley Prep by five strokes (314-319).

'This feels good,' said Malafronte, the individual runner-up. 'Losing all the seniors from last year and still being able to win, I like it.'

But the Bucs were in the race for the team title to the very end thanks to Morris, who had two birdies and two bogeys.

'I was very pleased with how I hit the ball off the tee and my iron game,' said Morris, who birdied Nos. 2 and 8 to finish the front nine 1 under. 'I thought I left a couple of birdie putts out there, but I'm very pleased. That was a solid score in this wind.'

Jesuit's Jordan Hiller (80) and Jack Twomey (81) posted rounds good enough to trump the scores of the Bucs remaining trio of Matthew Alberts (80), Austin Suarez (82) and John Mills (85).

Tampa Catholic, which got an 82 from Trent Stoker and an 83 from Nick Sarich, finished third to claim the final team berth in next week's region tournament, which will also be at The Eagles.

On the girls side, twin sisters Kim and Kyleen Carpenter shot 81 and 85, respectively, to finish first and second to help Berkeley Prep easily win the district title. The Bucs finished 71 strokes better than runner-up Holy Names.

'We didn't play our best, but it was still good enough,' Wesley Chapel coach Scott Boyd said. 'It feels good to be moving on.'

WESLEY CHAPEL - It was a long day for everyone at Lexington Oaks with eight hours of golf followed by two playoffs, but the result was worth the wait for Land O' Lakes, which finished runner-up to Central.

Central won the district title (321), and the Gators (326) were led by Josh Barnett's 75 and Wes Parrish's 77.

Springstead grabbed third and the last team berth to regionals with 332. Wesley Chapel was fourth with 352.

LUTZ - Sickles' Alex Milan was the only golfer to turn in an even-par round and it was good enough.

Milan shot a 72 at Heritage Harbor on a breezy day. Milan and her father played the course Sunday, mapping out a game plan, but that plan didn't include windy conditions.

'On the front, it was pretty calm,' Milan said. 'But on the back, the wind really picked up. It made a little bit of difference in shot selection.'

Plant won its seventh consecutive district title. Plant's top two golfers struggled somewhat, but No. 3 Genevieve King turned in a 77, good enough for third.

Sickles' Amanda Bair (77) was second, which helped her team finish third. Gaither, led by Francesca Pierce's 85, finished second. The top three teams advance to regional.

Also advancing: Alonso's Kaitlyn Yarbrough (99) and Kaleigh Yarbrough (115) and Chamberlain's Amy Morina (109).

PLANT CITY - Durant's Amy West said she felt a burst of confidence when she eagled No. 10 at Walden Lake. West's confidence was well placed as the junior shot a 4-under 32 on the back nine to finish at 4-under 68 to win medalist honors.

'When I eagled that hole I knew I was good to go,' West said. 'At that point I was pretty confident.'

East Bay took the title with 367, led by Julie Rolfe (83) and Abby Rolfe (90). Wharton (369) was second and Durant (371) third. All three advance to region.

King's Kelsey Gibson (71) was second and Shena Yang of Wharton (73) third.

TARPON SPRINGS - On a day when talk swirled around the toughness of the narrow, winding Wentworth Golf Club course, a swirling wind added to the challenge as scores soared.

Dunedin endured the conditions, shooting 312 for the title, followed by Palm Harbor University (323) and host East Lake (326). The top three advance to the regional.

Zack Sobel of Palm Harbor was the top golfer, shooting a 74, followed by Countryside's Matt Arace (76) and Dunedin's Travis Houston (77).

The top three individuals - Alec Konstantin (78, Tarpon Springs), Kenny Cavender (78, Mitchell) and Matt Arace (76, Countryside) - not on advancing teams moved on as well.

LARGO - For Seminole coach Steve Hoff, Monday's outcome at East Bay Country Club came as no surprise. The same can't be said for nearly anyone who witnessed the performance by Northeast's Connor Chambers.

Seminole, thanks to some of the day's lowest scores during windy conditions, won its second district championship in three years with a 328, edging Northeast by two strokes. The victory sends both schools, plus third-place finisher St. Petersburg, to the regional.

On the girls side, Seminole's Meghan Chapman won medalist honors at 4-over 75.

'Based on the scores we had coming in, we thought we had a real good shot at winning the district,' Hoff said. 'The wind definitely affected a couple of my players and I thought we could have scored better, but I'm happy with the way they adjusted.'

Chambers, a freshman who averaged 82 during the season, fired a 78 to edge Seminole's Chris Hanson by one stroke and earn the individual honor. Chambers' plan of playing consistent golf throughout the round was epitomized by his ability to score pars, while others made bogey. For the round, Chambers had only one birdie and one double bogey.

Osceola's Matt Heinz (84), Dixie Hollins' Brock Jensen (86) and Lakewood's John Stewart (86) earned spots in the region as well.

PALM HARBOR - Among the sea of black, there was one red mark that stood out. And while red usually means bad things, it's a good color in golf.

Calvary Christian freshman Taylor Hancock fired a 4-under 68 to win medalist honors at Tarpon Woods Country Club to lead his team to the district title.

Calvary scored 301 with St. Petersburg Catholic second (307) and Indian Rocks Christian (325) edging Clearwater Central Catholic (326) for the final region spot. All advance to the region tournament Oct. 23 at The Eagles in Oldsmar.

Admiral Farragut's In Ho Hwang and Shorecrest's Matthew Reese were the lowest players not from a qualifying team and advanced to region with 78s. They will be joined by Northside Christian's David Dresselhaus (79).

In girls competition, Northside Christian (321) won.
