Video: Interview From Jail
CLEARWATER - Allan Burney, the 19-year-old attempted murder suspect who produced a DVD about the rough life in North Greenwood, claims he is in jail because of the video.
Allan Burney
Burney, of 1749 Jade Ave., surrendered Thursday night to face charges he played a role in a shooting Oct. 8 that left a 23-year-old man dead and caused schools to be locked down.
Burney is the co-host of a DVD titled "Da Hood Gone Wild," featuring life in North Greenwood, a poor, predominantly black neighborhood in the city. The DVD shows street beat downs, including a man on a bike being attacked.
From Pinellas County Jail, Burney spoke to Channel 8, he said, to set the record straight.
"It ain't funny," he told Channel 8. "It's just that all of this is getting blown out of proportion like this. I feel like I got targeted because of my movie."
Burney is charged with four counts of attempted first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Michael Scott at Woodbine and Betty Lane. Police said Burney and Gaylord Shaw shot at four people in a car.
Burney said he was there when it happened but had nothing to do with it.
"I was inside of a house and everything that took place was outside, that's what I'm trying to say," Burney said. "I was by the scene but I wasn't actually on the scene."
Burney said there will be a part two and three to the DVD. He said his co-producer is going to finish the project even if Burney is sitting in jail.
"It's going to be finished regardless whether I'm here or not because I still have another host and he's going to finish it for me," Burney said. "I know he'll hold it down for me."
Police continue to look for others they believe were involved in the shooting.
Gaylord Shaw
It started after an argument between two groups of men broke out in a convenience store parking lot at North Betty Lane and Springdale Street.
One group left in a gold Dodge Intrepid but members of the other group fired into the car. The car crashed into a utility pole about a block and a half away. The driver, Scott, 23, later died at Bayfront Medical Center.
That evening, investigators arrested Shaw, 19, of Clearwater, on a charge of first-degree murder in Scott's death. Later, Shaw was charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder.
Arrest affidavits say none of Burney's bullets struck any of the occupants of the Intrepid. He was being held at Pinellas County Jail on $400,000 bail.
