BROOKSVILLE - Hernando County deputies are still searching for a burglary suspect, but they have ended the intensive manhunt they conducted earlier today.

The target of the manhunt is a burglary suspect who was shot twice by a homeowner. Deputies say the homeowner drove onto his property and spotted a red pickup in the driveway. He armed himself with a .22-caliber pistol loaded with rat shot, entered his home and surprised a man, shooting him in the stomach and buttock, said Lt. Scott Bierwiler of the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities say the man has a shaved head and was wearing a white tank top at the time of the attempted burglary. He may be carrying a 9 mm handgun thought to have been stolen from the home at 11370 Sunshine Grove Road, eight miles north of busy State Road 50.

Residents are urged to lock their homes while the suspect is on the loose.

The manhunt took place near Central High, West Hernando Middle and Pine Grove Elementary schools, but the schools never went on lockdown. All roadblocks in the area have been lifted.
