8/9/07: Geiger Hopes Helipad Flies With Panel
CLEARWATER - Former NBA player Matt Geiger is considering appealing the denial of his request to build a helipad at his Tarpon Springs estate, his consultant said Wednesday.
The Pinellas County Commission sided with Geiger's neighbors and voted Tuesday night against his application for a conditional-use permit to build the helicopter pad on his 36-acre estate at 3385 Old Keystone Road.
County planners had recommended approving the request with conditions, such as limiting round-trip flights to four per week, limiting flights to daytime hours and avoiding fights when migratory birds are in peak numbers.
Residents of East Lake showed up to oppose the request, raising concerns about noise and spooking horses in the area. Nearly 300 residents had signed petitions against the helipad.
Geiger, who played for the Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets and Philadelphia 76'ers during his 10-year career, has 30 days to file an appeal with the circuit court if he so chooses, consultant Todd Pressman said.
