PLANT CITY - A man says that when his girlfriend's 7-month-old puppy came at him this morning, he backhanded it, sending it flying into a cabinet and breaking its neck, an arrest report states.
The dog died.
Jesse Lee Marchant, 20, was arrested at 3:47 a.m. today by Plant City police and charged with felony cruelty to an animal. The incident happened at the home he shares with his girlfriend, 1102 W. Dixie St., according to an arrest report.

After a verbal argument between Marchant and his girlfriend, she went for a walk, leaving him alone with the 3-pound, mixed-breed puppy.
Marchant's girlfriend heard the puppy yelp three times, and when she went back to the house, he came out and said, "I think your dog is dead," the arrest report states.
He remains in Orient Road Jail today, with bail set at $2,000.
