It's no news to local motorists that Hillsborough County's traffic is among the worst in the nation.
As subdivisions sprung up hither and yon, the county failed to keep up with needed road improvements, let alone plan any alternatives.
Today, finally, commissioners will hold a public hearing on a modest proposal to spend more money on roads. It's your chance to be heard.
A task force chaired by Commissioner Ken Hagan recommends the county spend $500 million over five years to relieve some of the most pressing road problems. Among the projects: extending Citrus Park Drive to Sheldon Road, widening Highway 301 in South Hillsborough and improving Old Memorial Highway.
The plan would enhance Hillsborough's transportation spending, which until recently has run less than $50 million a year.
This is not, it should be stressed, the visionary multi-modal transit plan needed in this county. Spending on transit is limited to express buses on Florida and Fletcher avenues.
But the investment would improve traffic flow and show residents that the county may be serious about dealing with Hillsborough's transportation mess.
