ZEPHYRHILLS - Police Chief Russell Barnes this week tapped Officer Rob McKinney, the department's crime prevention supervisor, as its newest captain.
McKinney, 42, will start his new role Monday. He assumes the job last held by Randy Belasic, who took an early retirement last year and moved out of state.
McKinney began his law enforcement career in 1984 at age 19 as an officer with the now-defunct police department in St. Leo. That same year, he transferred to the Zephyrhills Police Department and the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.
In 2000, he left law enforcement to become a pastor at Westside Baptist Church in Wesley Chapel.
He maintained his Zephyrhills connection by volunteering as a reserve officer and as the police department's chaplain. Last year, he became a full-time employee again in the position of crime prevention supervisor.
'He's a very intelligent guy. He's very trustworthy. He believes in the department and the community and is dedicated to the department's mission,' Barnes said.
McKinney will earn about $49,900 in his new position, the chief said.
