TAMPA - Berkeley Prep sophomore hitter Lindsay Young isn't your typical 5-foot-11 volleyball player.
She moves like a 5-4 libero, has the soft touch of a setter, but still possesses the power of a go-to hitter.
On Tuesday, Young used all her abilities to lead Berkeley Prep (18-6) past rival Tampa Prep (11-12) in four games, 25-20, 25-18, 12-25, 25-16. The Buccaneers won the previous match earlier in the season.
Young finished with 17 digs and a handful of kills, while sophomore Alex Dickerson and senior Danielle Michiels had 11 kills each. Freshman Amber Mirabello had six blocks and junior libero Christina Theofilos added 16 digs. Sophomore setter Becca Howard had 27 assists.
In the second game, with her team trailing 13-9, Young got one dig after another, keeping the ball in play to allow Berkeley to rally to a 20-18 lead.
'I was just thinking that I have to get this ball up,' Young said. 'We had to win that game.'
Young, who was selected to The Tampa Tribune All-Hillsborough County first team as a freshman last year, knows her abilities can cause problems for opponents.
'I'm different,' she said. 'They don't expect a middle hitter to play back row, but I can.'
Junior middle hitter Dana Malinowski led Tampa Prep with 10 kills. Sophomore setter Caroline Dillabough had 31 assists.
'There was a turning point in every game,' Malinowski said.
'It was us making plays and them not making plays,' Berkeley Prep coach Randy Dagostino said.
