GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Bill Miller.
Kingfish made an appearance along the Gulf beaches this week. Good catches were reported off Sand Key, and scattered catches have been reported from St. Pete Beach to Boca Grande. These early arrivals are the scouts for the main bunch of kingfish that are still to our north and headed this way.
Captain Daryl Brown has been catching good redfish and snook around docks in Tampa Bay. Jumbo live shrimp rigged on a jig head has been the best setup. Brown also has been catching a lot of trout with shrimp under a popping cork by the Frankland and Gandy bridges.
The Weeki Wachee and Aripeka area is loaded with redfish, according to captain Jim Bradley, who says they are biting anything you can throw to them.
The beaches off Englewood and Boca Grande are loaded with mackerel, kingfish, sharks and tarpon. Captain Van Hubbard has been slow-trolling live bait for red-hot action. Wire leaders are necessary, and heavy spinning tackle will help you land the bruisers.
The stone crab season got off to a fair start. Crabbers are saying a front or two will make the crabs move better and produce good catches.
Captain Bill Miller hosts 'Hooked on Fishing' on Thursdays and Sundays from 7-8 p.m., and Fridays and Mondays from 11 a.m.-noon on Bright House Networks Catch 47.
