TAMPA – A 16-year-old Alonso High School student faces vehicular homicide charges in the death of a 49-year-old motorbike rider on Countryway Boulevard in September.
John Holland Jr. turned himself in at the Juvenile Assessment Center at 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
The wreck occurred about 3:17 p.m. Sept. 26 on Countryway Boulevard just south of Woodbay Drive, deputies said. Holland, 16, a sophomore at Alonso High School, was driving a 2005 Nissan 350 Z sports car north on Countryway.
Holland lost control of the sports car, hitting and killing Robert Jeff Baughman, 49, who was headed south on a motor scooter, authorities said. The car then went into a pond. Holland and passenger Trevor Ekovich, also a 10th-grader at Alonso, was not hurt.
Ekovich has not been charged in the incident.
