PLANT CITY - A Plant City restaurant owner whose family has been serving up good food for more than 50 years is changing the name of his Lakeland restaurant.
Fred's Southern Kitchen is the new name for Fred's Market Restaurant in Lakeland. Owner Fred Johnson said the new name "better reflects the Johnson family heritage of casual family dinning and Southern hospitality."
The first Johnson family restaurant was founded in 1954 by Johnson's parents, Elton and Evelyn. Other successful Johnson family-run restaurants followed, including BuddyFreddys, named for Fred Johnson and his brother, Buddy.
The Plant City location, at 1401 W. Dr. Martin L. King Jr. Blvd., will continue to use the Fred's Market Restaurant name.
A Bartow restaurant that Johnson and wife, Tammy, plan to open early next year will carry the Fred's Southern Kitchen name.
