"I'm still in shock after getting the news," Squires said in a Sarasota County School District news release. "But I really think my students are the stars. Our motto is 'Go big or go home!' Like a lot of teachers, I work hard to get my students to work hard at learning."
USA Today launched the program in 1998 to recognize outstanding teachers across the nation. The newspaper chose 20 teachers for this year's All-USA Teacher Team. Squires is one of 13 individual teachers and one team of two teachers to receive honorable mentions.
Teaching is a second career for Squires. The former clinical speech pathologist was inspired to become a teacher because of her son's needs as a gifted student. Though she always admired classroom teachers, Squires said she never saw herself as one.
"I wanted to have a hand in my child's education," she said in the release, "so I became a teacher and never looked back."
Squires, a National Board Certified Teacher, emphasizes writing and economics in her classes. Squires' students, whom she calls Squires' Stars, have received several awards individually and collectively for student projects.
