Pregnancy can be one of the most exciting times in a woman's life. Add prenatal yoga to the mix, and the experience can become a time of pure joy.
Breath work weaved into stretching and meditation is what makes yoga the perfect preparation for childbirth. Stretching and strengthening muscles prepare for the hard work of labor. And yoga offers a wonderful way for moms-to-be to connect with their unborn child.
"Your body is changing so rapidly, and yoga can help you change more gracefully. It can help you be more present with your breath, body and growing baby," says Lisa Wilson, instructor at Yogani Studios in south Tampa. "Your intuition is stronger during pregnancy than at any other time in your life. Be guided by your comfort while practicing."
CeCe Coppins, 40, and Leah Carden, 34, are demonstrating yoga partner poses you can do anywhere. Coppins is expecting her first baby Jan. 12. Carden is expecting her second baby April 1.
VRKSASANA (TREE POSE)
Mommies-to-be, this pose is ideal for strengthening the lower body, including the spine, thighs, calves and ankles. It also helps improve balance and relieve sciatica. If you're just starting out and feel unsteady in this pose, brace your back against a wall for support.
1. Stand with your feet about hip-width apart.
2. Shift your weight onto the left foot, and bend your right leg, turning it so it's perpendicular to the left.
3. Place your foot on the inner left thigh and stand erect, pushing your pelvis slightly forward and down.
4. Bring your hands together in front of your chest as if praying. To mix it up, try stretching your arms toward the sky, parallel to each other. You can also touch your palms together to form an inverted V.
