The American Contract Bridge League's Summer North American Bridge Championships kicks off with the final stages of the Grand National Teams, which begins with grassroots eliminations. (Alas, the GNT has lost much of its prestige amid the proliferation of events. In my area, only one team showed up for the district playoff.) Florida (Mike Becker-Warren Spector, Larry Cohen-Dave Berkowitz, Jeff Meckstroth-Eric Rodwell) beat a team representing New York.
In today's deal, New York's North-South wandered into 3NT and went two down. In the replay, Berkowitz-Cohen for Florida got to four spades. South's bid of one club promised only a good hand.
West led the ace of diamonds, and East wondered how to induce his partner to find the winning shift to a club. He signaled discouragement, and West shifted - but to a heart. Cohen was able to discard a club on dummy's king of hearts and make his game.
West's heart shift might have been a winner but seems against the odds in view of South's strength-showing opening bid.
