HAINES CITY – The Polk County Medical Examiner's Office has determined the death of an 8-week-old boy on Polk County Road in September was caused by shaken baby syndrome, authorities said.
No charges have been filed. Polk County sheriff's detectives are seeking the public's help for information.
The incident began about 6 a.m. Sept. 28 when Robert Durham, 33, of 3960 Polk County Road, found his infant son Zachary unresponsive, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Robert Durham attempted to revive the infant while his wife, Stacy, dialed 911.
Zachary was taken by ambulance to Heart of Florida Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, a sheriff's news release stated. The medical examiner's office ruled the death a homicide during its investigation.
Interviews with Zachary's primary caregivers, his parents and maternal grandmother Donna Mattox Hogue, revealed no information which would account for Zachary's extensive injuries, the news release stated.
Anyone with information can call Polk Crimestoppers at 1-800-226-TIPS.
