Published: October 19, 2007

THE DIFFERENCE: Gryphons kick returner Craig Plastic made two spectacular dashes to the end zone, and was all the offense Sickles (6-2) would need in a tough 5A-6 district win against King (2-5). Plastic returned a punt 86 yards for the first touchdown of the night in the first half. In the third quarter, a Lions offside penalty resulted in the Lions having to re-do a kickoff that Plastic took 85 yards for the score.

GAME NOTES: Sickles running back Josh Mendez once again took the bulk of the workload for the Gryphon offense, carrying the ball 23 times for 121 yards. … The Gryphon defense recorded two sacks, one interception, two recovered fumbles, and limited the Lions' offense to a field goal. ... King split the majority of their carries between three backs - Jameel Jackson toted the ball 11 times for 47 yards, Donovan Celerin had 14 carries for 54 yards, and Mike Jones had six carries for 18 yards.

STAT OF THE GAME: King had 12 first downs to Sickles' four.

QUOTE OF THE GAME: "Our special teams came out big - Craig Plastic, what can you say, you can talk about some ugly things happening, but sometimes ugly can be beautiful." - Gryphons coach Pat O'Brien
