TALLAHASSEE - Daryl Jones ran for 256 yards, scored a touchdown and set up another as Norfolk State held on for a 33-27 win over Florida A&M in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game on Thursday night.
The Rattlers (2-5, 1-3 MEAC) stuck with the Spartans for most of the game and had a chance to drive for the winning touchdown, but Don Carey intercepted Florida A&M quarterback Leon Camel's pass on fourth down to seal the win for the Spartans.
With the Spartans (6-1, 5-0) nursing a seven-point lead, Jones rumbled 48 yards to the Florida A&M 15-yard line, and Timothy Ferrell took a handoff on the next play around the edge and into the end zone. The snap was mishandled on the extra point, and the Spartans settled for a 33-20 lead.
A costly Spartans mistake let the Rattlers back in the game. Naron Sanderlin committed pass interference on fourth down, giving the Rattlers 15 yards and a fresh set of downs. Four plays later, Camel found Willie Hayward in the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown to pull within six points.
Jones carried with ball 38 times for his 256 yards, and the Rattlers could never find an answer for the 240-pound bruiser. His only hiccup of the night still worked for Norfolk State. As he closed in on his second touchdown of the night, he was hit and fumbled into the end zone. But Spartans fullback Brandon Sawyer emerged with the football, giving the Spartans a 17-7 second quarter lead.
Camel was intercepted four times and finished 6-for-23 for 64 yards and a touchdown. Phillip Sylvester paced the Rattlers on the ground with 98 yards and two touchdowns.
UTAH 27, TCU 20: Darrell Mack pounded his way for 100 yards rushing with a touchdown, and Utah won its fourth straight game since starting quarterback Brian Johnson returned from injury, beating TCU.
Mack's fourth straight 100-yard game - on 32 carries - and Johnson's return coincide with the winning streak that has kept the Utes (5-3, 2-2 Mountain West) on the fringe of contending for the conference title.
Johnson, who missed three games after separating his shoulder in the season opener, completed 13 of 20 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown. His only interception didn't hurt the Utes.
TCU (4-4, 1-3), with three 11-win seasons the past four years, already has three losses to teams ahead of the Frogs in the Mountain West standings.
