GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Mike Anderson (above right, with 'Reel Animals' partner Billy Nobles).
With steady schools of bait on the flats this week, we did not have to travel far for steady action.
The Spanish mackerel, trout and bluefish bites were steady all week. Fishing over the deeper cuts of the flats in 3 to 4 feet of water was the ticket. Using greenbacks under a popping cork seemed to be the trick. We caught several nice mackerel in the 3- to 4-pound range along with large numbers of feisty blues.
The trout action was also very good with most of the fish coming in around 14 to 16 inches, although we did score some in the 18- and 19-inch range. Be sure to use a product like the new Arc dehooker on these fish so you can release them with as little harm as possible. The trout fishery is bouncing back some from our red tides so help them out.
On the higher tides of the week, we were able to catch some nice reds around the mangrove islands and oyster bars all through Cockroach and Miguel bays. I also have received some great red and snook reports coming out of Tierra Ceia and Sarasota Bay. My recommendation for some great action is the deep flats with greenbacks under corks. A steady dose of blues and Spanish for the kids will make a trip they won't soon forget.
