Walden Elementary Extravaganza Comes Early

PLANT CITY - The city's calendar is filled with tradition, and few events are as popular as Walden Lake Elementary School's Eagle Extravaganza.

For the first time in memory, the school's big blowout will be held in the fall — Oct. 26, to be precise.

The event was moved from the spring to the fall to take advantage of better weather and a time of year less cluttered with activities.

Expect the same school carnival atmosphere, Assistant Principal Elisa Walker said. "It's a fun family event," Walker said of the extravaganza, which began in 1991.

The festivities are from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and include lots of food and entertainment.

The carnival games, geared for preschool through elementary children, include ring toss, duck pond, spin art and others, said Stacy Dunn, whose son Blake is a Walden Lake third-grader. Other activities include a moonwalk and cakewalk. Food and drinks such as pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers, Starbucks coffee and other refreshments will be available.

Tickets are required for the food, refreshments and games. Tickets are four for $1, and most booths require three or four tickets.

There will be drawings for more than 20 gift bundles, with themes such as Barbie, family fun night, pool party, sports, home improvement and more. The organizers call them "gift baskets," but they contain so many goodies they often go way beyond what would fit in a basket, Dunn said.

Also at the extravaganza, the school's fourth-grade chorus will perform in the courtyard at 4:30 p.m., Walker said. Agencies such as the Plant City Police Department and Plant City Fire Rescue are expected to have vehicles on display.

Money raised at the Eagle Extravaganza helps update technology and meet other needs at the 850-student school at 2800 Turkey Creek Road.
