NEW TAMPA - After a successful five years on Ybor City's Seventh Avenue, Acropolis Bar and Grill is opening its second location today in New Tampa.
The traditional Greek restaurant, known as much for its belly dancers and hookahs as for its tasty cuisine, will celebrate the new location with a grand opening soiree at 8 p.m. today. The public is invited to sample Greek and other Mediterranean dishes at the free party.
Owner Costa Waez said he didn't hesitate taking over the former Tampa Brickyard space at Oak Ramble Plaza even though the strip center is home to a thriving Greek cafe, Louis Pappas.
'We have a different concept,' Waez said. 'We have a different menu and different hours. We don't look at it as competition.'
The menu is extensive, with dozens of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, gyros, entrees and desserts. Waez is adding new items to a menu that features distinctive dishes such as the Flaming Kefalograviera Cheese appetizer, Drunken Quail and Grouper Plaki.
Waez, who lives in Pebble Creek, wanted to bring some of Ybor's atmosphere to New Tampa. 'I love this area,' he said. 'But if you go up Bruce B. Downs all the way to S.R. 54, nobody offers the kind of entertainment we're bringing. Everybody's excited about it.'
Unlike its neighbor, which closes at 9 p.m., Acropolis will keep the kitchen open until midnight most weeknights and 3 a.m. on weekends. Belly dancers and musicians will perform on weekends.
