Taylor Violette made three field goals Friday night, including the winner from 27 yards out with 9:48 left in the game, as Sarasota defeated Riverview, 22-21.
The circumstances could have gotten the best of the Sailors in the Class 6A-District 6 game. With star quarterback Casey Kelly hospitalized, junior Kyle Gibbs got his second career start and led his team on four consecutive scoring drives after the Sharks took a 21-6 lead late in the second quarter.
Gibbs and the Sailors (5-3, 2-0 6A-6) marched 72 yards on 10 plays on the first series and pulled within 7-6 when Robin Rothenbach tied the school record for career receptions with a 4-yard touchdown.
The Sharks had three consecutive touchdown drives in the first half. Jahleel Addae, who rushed for 217 yards on 26 carries, scored on runs of 23 and 38 yards, while Eric Lampe made it 14-6 with a 6-yard run early in the second quarter.
