PHU Boys, Girls Win 3A-5 Titles
PALM HARBOR - When you make winning district swimming and diving titles look like a foregone conclusion for several years, you can't help but be a bit disappointed when you tie for the title.

Palm Harbor's boys team won another Class 3A-District 5 title Friday, but this time it had to share the honor with rival Countryside, with the teams tied with 478 points. The Hurricanes made it a sweep by claiming the girls championship with 478 points, edging Countryside by 20.

'The kids definitely surpassed my expectations, because we had a lot of them who weren't usually swimming well step up for us,' Coach Lisa Bitting said. 'It's very exciting, and great for the girls because Countryside beat us in a dual meet earlier this season.

'The boys tying is a bit disappointing, because Countryside is our rival, but they swam well also, so you still have to be happy with the way things turned out.'

Individually, Gregg Cooke of Sickles won the 50 and 100-yard free, while Rachel Burns of Countryside won the 100 and 200 free.

CLASS 2A-DISTRICT 9: The Northeast boys and Clearwater girls won the competition Friday at St. Petersburg's North Shore Pool.

Clearwater coach David Paul said his girls' 435-point district win was a pleasant surprise. 'I thought our boys would win and the girls would take second,' he said.

Northeast's boys finished first with 405 points, with Cameron Chambers winning the 200 and 500 freestyle. The girls finished 65 points behind the Tornadoes.

Olympic hopeful Megan Romano won the 200 free and 100 backstroke for Northeast. The 16-year-old junior is preparing for next year's trials in Omaha, Neb. 'I felt good, but didn't do any personal bests at the district meet,' she said. 'I looked at it as a sprint practice.'
