Regarding 'Goodbye Old Friend' (BayLife, Oct. 14):
We lost our beloved Yorkie on my birthday nearly two years ago. The loss of a pet can be very sorrowful and painful for us and other pets as well. Pets have their own little traits that make them bond to us so well, and there's nothing wrong with missing them or feeling you've lost a family member, because you have. Buckles' memory will always be close to our hearts, and we have since obtained two other Yorkies.
When obtaining another pet, it's important to hold onto the memories of the departed one, but don't expect the new one to take its place because it never could. It's perfectly OK to love and bond with another pet - just allow it to be its own self.
Pixie and Smokey have won our hearts in their own ways, but we still miss and love our little Buckles. I take much comfort in the words that accompanied our pet's ashes: 'Farewell master, yet not farewell. Where I go ye too shall dwell. When ye come where I have stepped, ye will wonder why ye wept.'
