PITTSBURGH - LaRod Stephens-Howling scored the go-ahead touchdown and was one of two Pittsburgh running backs with more than 100 yards of total offense, helping the Panthers upset No. 23 Cincinnati 24-17 Saturday.

Pitt (3-4, 1-1), which had lost four in a row coming into the contest, didn't take the lead until Stephens-Howling carried the ball for the fifth consecutive play during a fourth-quarter drive that ended with a 7-yard score.

Cincinnati (6-2, 1-2) entered the game leading the Big East in rushing defense but was shredded by a Pitt running attack that featured big days by Stephens-Howling and LeSean McCoy. Stephens-Howling carried 13 times for 100 yards and McCoy, a freshman, gained 137 yards on 25 carries.
Ben Mauk was 21 of 32 for 237 yards and rushed for 94 yards and a TD for Cincinnati.

WEST VIRGINIA 38, MISSISSIPPI STATE 13: Pat White threw two TD passes and ran for another score in one half and Steve Slaton rushed for 127 yards and a score, leading No. 9 West Virginia past visiting Mississippi State (4-4).

The Mountaineers (6-1) scored on their first five possessions and weren't threatened afterward. They now enter the heart of the Big East schedule with a showdown Saturday at Rutgers.

Playing at home for the first time in a month, West Virginia put together its best first quarter of the season. But after jumping ahead 31-0 early in the second, the Mountaineers managed just two first downs and no points on their next five possessions.

Given multiple chances to close the gap, freshman Wesley Carroll could only temporarily rally Mississippi State, which lost to a ranked foe for the fourth time this year.

SYRACUSE 20, BUFFALO 12: Doug Hogue and Mike Williams scored in the final minute of the first half to break open a tie game and host Syracuse beat Buffalo to snap a three-game losing streak.

It was the last nonconference game of the season for Syracuse (2-6) and ended a two-game winning streak for Buffalo (3-5).

Syracuse quarterback Andrew Robinson, who entered the game with minus-31 yards rushing mainly because of 29 sacks, gained 62 yards on nine carries and was 15-for-28 for 265 yards and two picks.

Williams, a native of the Buffalo area, had seven catches for 113 yards and Taj Smith had three catches, also for 113. Hogue finished with 83 yards rushing as Syracuse, which entered the game averaging an anemic 58.4 yards per game, finished with 179.

Drew Willy was 32-for-48 for 286 yards passing for the Bulls.
