HUDSON - You would never have known that Hudson was missing two of its best defensive players and that its offense was anchored by a sophomore by the way the Cobras played Friday night.
The performance was sprinkled with a mishaps but nothing to where they weren't able to quickly recover in their 42-21 win over Gulf.
'This is a great team,' Hudson coach Mark Nash said. 'We spent the entire summer and offseason putting together a team that would fit our personnel. It's what we do every year.'
Leading Hudson was the two-headed offensive monster of quarterback Zack Wynn and running back Sean Scott.
Scott, a senior, had the best game of his career with 288 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries. His three touchdown runs were of 52, 65 and 83 yards.
Wynn, a sophomore, had 178 yards of total offense and three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing) with one interception that came almost at the game's end.
'Zack's come into his own,' Nash said. 'He still makes sophomore mistakes, you know, I was pulling my hair out sometimes. But a senior would make some of those mistakes. That's just the way it is, it's high school kids but he's coming into his own and Sean Scott is just an awesome player. He's one of the toughest kids in the county.'
Wynn was 10 of 15 for 124 yards passing, starting out 2-for-5 for 27 yards, 16 of which came on a touchdown pass, but then he found some consistency as Scott continued to pound the ball downfield.
'He did great,' Scott said of Wynn. 'He started out slow in the beginning. I really can't tell you what it was, but after a while we just started all getting in synch and Zach was making his throws and he was making the right reads. That's our dude right there. He's one of the leaders on our offense. We count on him to make us look good and put us in the right positions.'
Hudson's offense had put up 60-plus points in each of the last two games against some lesser teams, but who the Cobras did that against didn't matter to Gulf.
The Buccaneers knew their defense of mostly sophomores was in for a tough night.
'We didn't tackle No. 21 Scott and we knew we had to do that and their offense executed and ours didn't,' Fulmer said. 'It's kind of what I predicted all week. I've been doing this a long time and I know a good football team when I see one and they are a good football team. You don't score 130-something points in two weeks like they've done, I don't care who you're playing. You could be playing the Sisters of the Poor. You don't score that many points and if you're not good.'
Likewise, the Cobras were bracing for Pasco County's leading rusher David Williams, who ended the night with 215 yards and two touchdowns, but that wasn't enough to compete with Hudson's high-powered offense.
Unlike Hudson, the pass wasn't as much of an option for Gulf, especially with Hudson's defense bearing down all game.
'All week we had been preparing for this and the plan was to contain Williams and for the most part we did that,' Scott said. 'They got past us a couple times and it hurt us but we knew that if we kept the amount of points low then we could light it up and that's what we did.
'Our defense really stepped up. And I know I just moved here but there's a lot of talk about how there's a big rivalry between Gulf and Hudson so there was a lot of pressure. Everybody just had a great night.'
