GAINESVILLE - Florida FS Major Wright and WR Riley Cooper each had surgery Monday to repair broken digits, but Gators coach Urban Meyer said the pair may still play Saturday against Georgia.
''The positive about those two guys,'' Meyer said, ''is there's not two tougher players I've been around.''
Wright broke his right thumb and Cooper broke an undisclosed finger during Saturday's win at Kentucky. Meyer said Wright had a plate inserted in his thumb, while Cooper had two screws inserted in his finger. Meyer said Wright would have to wear a cast while playing.
DAVIS IMPROVING: Every day for the past few weeks, DT Torrey Davis has been one of the final players to leave the practice field. Davis said coaches have kept him after practice for extra conditioning so he can be ready for situations like the one he faced Saturday. The Armwood High graduate had to play much of the game after starter Clint McMillan injured his shoulder.
''They're trying to get me in game shape so I can stay in the whole game,'' Davis said after Monday's practice.
Meyer credited Davis with helping the Gators pressure Kentucky QB Andre' Woodson. He also said the post-practice conditioning regimen run by co-defensive coordinator Greg Mattison has helped Davis improve.
''Mattison is killing him, running him and running him and running him,'' Meyer said. ''It's starting to show up, and he made a difference in that game.''
CUNNINGHAM HONORED: Florida DE Jermaine Cunningham was named the SEC defensive lineman of the week Monday. Cunningham had 2 1/2 sacks (seven total tackles) against Kentucky. He also made 17 tackles two weeks earlier in a loss at LSU.
