TAMPA - A city traffic technician was arrested last night in what police said was his third DUI offense. He was driving a city vehicle, according to an arrest report.
Tampa police said Kenan Glenn Brown, 43, was driving north on MacDill Avenue and making a right turn to go east on Kennedy Boulevard when he was stopped.
His turn was "so wide that he traveled into oncoming lanes, causing a hazard to traffic," and once he was headed east on Kennedy, he had "extreme difficulty maintaining his lane," the report states.
Brown was stopped by officers at Howard Avenue. He smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, the report states.
Police said Brown couldn't stand on his own and refused to perform field sobriety tests or provide a breath sample for testing.
City traffic engineer Debbie Herrington said Brown does not have permission to drive a city vehicle while off duty. She was not aware of any special traffic studies he could have been performing last night.
Brown was hired in December 1990 and earns $55,619 annually, records show.
He was released from Orient Road Jail early today after posting $2,500 bail.
State law elevates a charge of driving under the influence from a misdemeanor to a third-degree felony upon the third offense.
This was the second time Brown refused to submit to a breath test. He also was charged with a first-degree misdemeanor, according to jail records. His two other DUI arrests were in 2000 and 1989, police said.
