GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Ray Markham.
We are down to a week remaining in trout season in the South Region, so naturally I would expect an onslaught of trout - big fat ones - to start pouring in to the area just as the season draws to a close.
We've been having banner catches for the past week of speckled trout. Days of 50 to 100 trout up to 22 inches have been the norm lately in the Terra Ceia/lower Tampa Bay areas.
We've caught them on topwaters, jigs and DOA Deadly Combos, but by far, trout have been taking the Deadly Combo rig (a clacking cork with the DOA Shrimp) in the new colors called the 'Carbonated Series' by a margin of 3 to 1 over other baits we've thrown.
Working the shrimp effectively with the Deadly Combo is easy. Pete Jones and Bill Finny hopped aboard my boat this week and for both anglers it was 'game on.' Neither had ever thrown a Deadly Combo, but within minutes of leaving the dock we were into trout. Jones was on a mission and was the first to score.
He was looking for his first redfish ever, but before leaving home Finny and Jones got instructions to 'bring home dinner.' So, in short order, two limits of trout were in the cooler and we went looking for Jones' first redfish.
Working a shoreline in Terra Ceia with CAL Jigs, Jones was tossing a new color that was black with red glitter and a chartreuse tail called Morning Glory. Within a few minutes, Jones was hooked up to an 8-pound, 27-inch red that made his day. As a bonus, his red was followed up by a snook, to complete an Inshore Grand Slam.
