Forget that the next-best streak is Pete Rose's 44-game run in 1978. Often overlooked is that if not for some bad luck in game No. 57, Joe D's streak would have climbed to 73 games.

CAL RIPKEN JR.

2,632 consecutive games

May 30, 1982 to Sept. 20, 1998

It's easy to say a record will never be broken; this one won't. Further, who will ever forget that magical September night in 1995 when Ripken passed Lou Gehrig's mark of 2,130 games.

EDWIN MOSES

122 straight wins in the

400-meter hurdles

1977-87

Sadly, he won only one gold medal during that span because of the 1980 U.S. boycott of the Moscow Games. Still, he easily was track's most dominant athlete during that time.

WAYNE GRETZKY

51-game points streak

1983-84

The Great One had 153 points (61 goals, 92 assists) during the streak. To put that into context, Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby led the NHL in scoring last season with 120 points.

He won the U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship in 2000, then the Masters in '01 - by a combined 26 strokes. So impressive, it's called the Tiger Slam.
