ST. PETERSBURG - A high school student tried robbing a CiCi's Pizza from the drive-through Wednesday night, but an employee recognized him as a former co-worker and slammed the window shut, St. Petersburg police say.

Moments later, Salaam Jovantae Singletary, 17, who attends Boca Ciega High School in Gulfport, was found by police near the fast-food restaurant at 2216 34th St. S., St. Petersburg police spokesman George Kajtsa said.

The St. Petersburg teen was at the wheel of a Chevrolet Astro, with two young male passengers, Kajtsa said. When officers tried pulling the vehicle over, Singletary sped off. After a short police pursuit, Singletary crashed into a tree and was taken into custody, Kajtsa said.

Singletary was charged with one count of armed robbery in the 7:50 p.m. hold-up. The two other young men ran off and have not been found, Kajtsa said.

A revolver investigators say Singletary pointed at the former co-worker Wednesday night has been recovered, Kajtsa said.

Singletary also is a suspect in a robbery at a McDonald's restaurant in Gulfport, Kajtsa said. It was unknown whether he has been charged in that case.
